STUDIO 54 DISCO PARTY TOPS- HISTORY OF GLOMESH

Glomesh was first produced in Australia, in 1958 by Hungarian immigrants Alice and Louis Kennedy, who bought their experience from the European couture scene. They Started a factory in Bondi, Sydney, creating eye catching gold, silver and enamel wares which dazzled high society’s fashion elite.

STUDIO 54 COSTUME

Glomesh is associated with the style of Studio 54, the world famous New York decadent disco club, which launched at the height of the disco craze. It’s remembered for its glamourous celebrity guest lists, restrictive entry policies- based on one's appearance and style, and open drug use. Some of the noteable celebrity patrons included Andy Warhol, Debby Harry, David Bowie, Cher, Jerry Hall, Halston, Michael Jackson, Margaux Hemmingway, Bianca and Mick Jagger and many more. In 1980, the club shut down after its owners were convicted for evading taxes. In December 1978, the owners came to the attention of the tax department after saying in a newspaper that Studio 54 had made $7 million in its first year and "only the Mafia made more money". Shortly after this, the nightclub was raided and the owners were arrested for $2.5 million worth of unpaid tax.

Studio 54 closed with a final party in 1980, with performances from Diana Ross and Liza Minnelli.

The building where the club ran, was designed by famed architect Eugene De Rosa. The venue was built in 1927 and was originally named the Gallo Opera House . Beginning with a large-scale production of La bohème which closed after three weeks, the Gallo was met with a succession of failed attempts to draw an audience and was lost to foreclosure after only two years.

There have been several movies made about the club and the disco era, notably 54, made in 1988 and more recently, Studio 54, made in 2018.
